NY court: No slander in falsely calling person gay

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A mid-level appeals court in New York says it’s no longer slander to falsely call someone gay.

The court says that although falsely calling someone gay or lesbian has for decades been grounds for slander, that’s no longer the case because being gay is no longer seen by society as negative.

The decision Thursday involves the case of a Broome County man who sued after he was called gay, saying that hurt his relationship with his girlfriend.

The court says a “tremendous evolution of social attitudes” and rights afforded to gays prompted the decision that overrules previous rulings.

The court action comes as gay rights groups try to combat the common expression that someone or something is “so gay.”

I think this is a fabulous decision ~ although not the first of its kind ~ but fabulous nonetheless.

Ok…coupla things…

If your girlfriend leaves you because someone called you gay, there are other issues there.

If you go so far as to sue the person who called you gay, there are more issues there.

And finally, do you think Tom Cruise and John Travolta keep up with these kinds of decisions?  And do you think they’re nervous?
