While You Were Out…

Today was my last day at work.  Therefore, today is the last day of throwing the ridiculous events of the day into one post.  Unless you like it this way, in which case I’ll keep the format.  Because I’m a whore and I’ll do whatever you want.

Under the heading “Know where you’re spending your money,” one of my favorite blogs, The Randy Report, brings us this bit of news ~ the shareholders of ExxonMobil have voted down workplace protections for their LGBT employees.  Also under the heading “Know where you’re spending your money,” one of my other favorite blogs, JoeMyGod, brings us this ~ for Father’s Day, JC Penny has an ad featuring gay dads and their kids.  Just a few weeks ago, for Mother’s Day, JC Penny released an ad featuring a family with two moms.  They also stood by Ellen Degeneres when One Million Moms made a big stink over the use of an out lesbian ~ clutch the pearls! ~ as their spokeperson.  JC Penny stood by Ellen.  And we should stand by JC Penny.

(I think it should be noted that One Million Moms isn’t necessarily one million moms.  As of 9:18pm EST on 5.30.12, their Facebook page boasted a robust 47,360 “likes.”  Not bad.  But it ain’t 1,000,000.  I realize that the name One Million Moms is a better name than ~ say ~ Forty-Seven Thousand Three Hundred Sixty Moms ~ but words do actually have meaning.  If they didn’t, I could go by the name Pulitzer Prize Winning Six Foot Six Ian.  But I can’t.  And if I did, it would be a lie.  I would be a liar.  Just sayin’.)

For the record, we do not cast votes solely at the ballot box on election days.  We cast votes everyday with our wallets.  Where we choose to spend our money ~ or not spend our money ~ is a powerful vote.  I try never to give my money to corporations that turn around and use that money to lobby against my full citizenship ~ against my full participation in this country ~ against me having the exact same rights as my straight brother.  Now the world is big and complicated and it’s difficult to keep track of who owns what and where all the money goes.  But I try.  A great resource for this is the HRC Buyer’s Guide.  I highly recommend it.  There is also an easy to use, free HRC Buyer’s Guide app.

In other news, Cynthia Nixon got married.

Les Miserables ~ the movie ~ came out with a trailer today.  If your FB feed is anything like mine, it’s riddled with theatre queens, theatre fans and theatre people.  And reactions to Anne Hathaway’s version of “I Dreamed a Dream” were excessively passionate, running the gamut from ecstasy to thinking she should be locked up for nineteen years.  Take a look.  Judge for yourself.  Why not?  Everyone else has.

California is poised to become the first state in the union to outlaw “ex-gay therapy” for minors.  The law has passed the State Senate and will now go on to the Assembly and then the Governor.  Let’s hope it makes it all the way!!!

Oh yeah, a guy in New Jersey threw chunks of his own intestine at some police officers.

And finally, today in history:  Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in France in 1431.  Benny Goodman was born in 1909.  The Lincoln Memorial was dedicated in 1922.  The clean-up at Ground Zero came to an end in New York City, 8 1/2 months after the terrorist attacks of 9.11.

And on that note, I’m going to call it a day.  More tomorrow.  So much more tomorrow.
