Dharun Ravi Recieves Sentence ~ 30 Days in Jail

Via CBS News ~

(CBS/AP) NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – A judge sentenced former Rutgers student Dharun Ravi today to 30 days in jail for using a webcam to spy on his roommate’s intimate encounter with another man.

Judge Glen Berman told Ravi to report to the Middlesex County Adult Correctional facility on May 31.

Ravi, 20, was convicted in March of 15 criminal counts, including bias intimidation and invasion of privacy, for using his webcam to view his 18- year-old roommate Tyler Clementi kissing another man in September 2010. Clementi committed suicide just days after the online peeping and quickly became a symbol of plight of gay youth in America.

Thoughts?

This is not only shocking, it is appalling to me. The Gender bias issue aside, I thought the judicial system was finally going to send a clear message that cyber bullying and the use of technology to make fun of people will not be tolerated. But I was wrong. What was I thinking? A good looking straight kid just had some childish fun. Who could blame him?

I’m so EXHAUSTED by the good ol’ boy system. And by one step forward equalling two steps back. And the young people of this generation getting a time out for every infraction.

I agree that 30 days is too short.  What do you think would be an appropriate sentence?
