Dear Chuck Lorre ~

My name is Roger Ian Rosen.  I’m an actor.  I spent years doing musical theatre ~ from European tours to national tours to regional theaters and Broadway ~ and am just now, at a professionally advanced age, getting into the film and television side of the business.  As I’m sure you know, this is difficult.  To date I have not been able to secure either an agent or even a single audition.  Nothing.  I am not alone.  There are thousands of actors just like me ~ ready, willing and able to take on our big break ~ but we are having trouble even getting in the door.

I guess you could say that if the talent were there the doors would open.  I’m inclined to agree.  Although I think we both know that there are many, many actors in Hollywood with little to no discernable talent whatsoever and yet they continue [continue reading...]

Rebel. Dream. Do.

For the past few years I have had the distinct feeling that I am over here but that my life is over there ~ that some decisions ~ a few made by me, most made for me ~ were irreversible and that the path I was on would simply unfold ~ for better or worse, and without my input.  The lesson of my thirties was largely that I control almost nothing.  But I took that lesson one step too far and lost sight of how massive, powerful and specific “almost” is ~ that an entire universe exists within “almost.”  Thoughtlessly, onto the pile of the uncontrollable I tossed my own future.

Walking a path I had no interest in walking ~ trying to convince myself that I could wring happiness from a job that would lead me nowhere ~ that would neither challenge me nor bring me great monetary rewards ~ [continue reading...]

What Happens When All the LGBT Hate Jobs Dry Up?

I have a confession to make.  I’m worried.  So worried that I didn’t sleep last night.  I tossed and turned, so concerned I am for Brian Brown of the National Organization for Marriage, Maggie Gallagher of the Institute for Marriage and Public Policy, Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth About Homosexuality ~ in fact, all of the leaders of the last-gasp LGBT hate lobby.  I’m worried that they have cast their lot with a dying breed and will soon cause the unemployment numbers to tick ever so slightly up.  Yes, I’m worried that their days as professional homo-haters are numbered.

The problem here is two-fold:  1.  In the short term, they keep losing, which just can’t make their bosses happy.  It begs the question ~ How good are they at their jobs?  And 2.  In the long term, I have to wonder if their customer base is simply drying up.  I [continue reading...]

Dear Every Elected Official in the Country ~

That’s it!  I’m tired.  Unbearably tired of you, our leaders, “sending prayers to those affected” or bestowing upon us “resilience” and “strength” not to comfort us, but simply to manipulate us and prevent an uprising.  I’m tired of being patronized about “America’s willingness to pitch in.”  Tired of it.  Because these are words that should be more precious.  Less obvious.  Less common.  These speeches in constant rotation solely to give our society the appearance that it is not coming apart at the seams ~ which I’m not so sure it’s not.  It should not be necessary to use these words every other news cycle.  You call us resilient more frequently than a top 40 radio station plays that horrible Call Me Maybe song.  Is it really necessary to test our resilience and our charity in the face of a national disaster EVERY FEW MONTHS?  No.  Hell no!  Can you prevent [continue reading...]
